1. Competition: PCAF: HEE/NIHR Pre-Doctoral Clinical Academic Fellowships

Description: The HEE/NIHR ICA Pre-doctoral Clinical Academic Fellowship (PCAF) funds personalised programmes of academic training that will equip awardees with the skills and experience to access doctoral level funding and dedicated time to prepare an application for a competitive, peer-reviewed doctoral level research training fellowship.

Eligibility: Applicants must belong to one of the ICA eligible professions and be employed by a provider of health and/or care services that is providing at least 50% of its services free at the point of delivery. The full eligibility criteria for the scheme are listed in the Applicant Guidance Notes, which are published to accompany each competition.

2. Competition: NIHR Pre-Doctoral Fellowship

Description: NIHR Pre-doctoral Fellowships are designed to support people who are looking to start or advance a career in health research methodology, specifically in one of the following areas:

Medical statisticsHealth economicsClinical trial designOperational researchModellingBioinformaticsQualitative researchMixed methods

It can be undertaken full-time over twelve months or on a part-time basis of between 50 and 100% Whole Time Equivalent.

Applicants without a masters degree should use the Fellowship to undertake a masters degree in one of the areas listed. Those already holding a relevant masters degree (or currently completing one) should use the Fellowship to gain additional support and training to advance to the next level of their career.

Eligibility: To be eligible for an NIHR Pre-Doctoral Fellowship you must:

Have completed a relevant first degreeHave a proposed host that is an English HEI, NHS body or other provider of health and/or care services.Be proposing to develop a career as a methodologist in one of the areas listed above.

This Fellowship is not open to clinical applicants looking to undertake training in research methods.  Clinical applicants looking to develop a career as a clinical academic should consider schemes from the relevant clinical academic programmes provided by NIHR.
